Roger Melchior was born and educated in Baltimore, Maryland. His love and servant leadership for his faith, for his family, for his country, and for the career fire service marked his life well lived.
A war veteran of the U.S. Navy during the Vietnam War, Roger returned home and joined the Baltimore City Fire Department (BCFD). He advanced through the ranks from rookie to field officer to training officer at BCFD Training Academy. His 23 years of service included many Exemplary and Mayoral Citations and medals for his bravery and self-sacrifice on the fire ground. During his tenure with BCFD, Roger earned a Bachelor’s degree and Master’s degree of Public Administration from the University of Baltimore.
Called to Green Bay, Wisconsin as Fire Chief and Public Safety Director, Roger implemented departmental innovations and professionalism always with citizen safety at the forefront.
Later, Roger accepted the position of Program Director of Fire Service at St. Petersburg College in Florida, where he managed course instruction and field training for students pursing a Bachelor of Science degree.
Roger’s last years were spent as an adjunct faculty member for Liberty University teaching Fire Science and related courses online.
Throughout all these moves, Roger sought to serve the Lord through the local church as chorister, deacon, trustee, elder and Bible student.
Roger is profoundly missed by his loving wife, Chris, and their daughters, Maggie, Katie and Emily, as well as colleagues and friends. Even so, as Roger passed into eternal life, the Lord embraced him declaring as he did in Matthews 25:23, “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
