Pauline R. Humphrey

Pauline Ruth Humphrey, born November 9, 1928, passed away May 5, 2024, at the age of 96 in Parrish, Florida.


She is survived by her daughter, Pamela Humphrey Briggs and her son-in-law Ronald Briggs with whom she lived with for the past 20 years. She is also survived by her nephews, Floyd and Richard Humphrey and Benjamin and Laforest Matthews.


Pauline was born in Bangor, Maine, to Ruth and Harold Woodard. Ruth passed away when Pauline was 2 years old and her father abandoned her. She was taken in and raised by her maternal grandparents, Addie and Everett Steen in Pittsfield, Maine.


She married her husband, Merton Humphrey, at the age of 18 and had one daughter, Pamela.


She worked off and on at the Edwards Plant and Church Goods in Pittsfield. She and Merton owned and operated the Humphrey’s Sandy Bay Camps on Moosehead Lake in

Greenville, Maine, for many years.


After retirement, she and her husband spent summers in Pittsfield, Maine, and winters in Bellevue, Florida. After the death of her husband she moved in with her daughter and son-in-law, first living in Ipswich MA., then in Parrish, Florida.


She was an avid gardener, tending to large vegetable and flower gardens. She also loved to read and fish. Fishing earned her the nickname of “Polly hook, line and sinker”. She loved all animals.


She is predeceased by her husband, Merton Humphrey, her brother, Alfred Woodard and her grandchildren, Heather Briggs Orcutt and James Briggs.


Per her wishes, there will be no memorial service. There will be a burial service at the Pittsfield Village Cemetery in Pittsfield, Maine, at a future date.
