Mitchel Joseph Belis, 103, passed away on Thursday, September 21, 2023 in Bradenton,Florida.
Mitchel was born in Janesville, Pennsylvania to the late Michael and Verna (Goss) Belis.
Mitchel married Kathryn Leona Scottson September 18, 1944. They had three children Mary Diane, Mitchel Charles and Mark Stephen. He worked as a coal miner and mining truck driver in Janesville. They moved from Janesville, PA to Kenmore, NY in 1952 where he worked for GM as a General Foreman in the Tonawanda Chevy engine plant for 29 years. He moved to Bradenton, FL in 2013.
A WWII veteran, he was a FC2 in the Navy from 1942-1945. He served on the USS Charles Ausburne, flagship for Destroyer Division 45 for the “Little Beaver” Squadron commanded by Capt. Arleigh A. Burke. He loved to say he spent three years in the Pacific entertaining the Japanese.
He was a member of the Masons, rose to a 33rd Degree Mason and was also a member of the Shriners.
He was predeceased by his parents, step father - Dominic Canutti, sister - Ella Frances Belis Siano, wife of 55 years - Kathryn, daughter in law - Elizabeth B. Belis, son -Mark, and great grand daughter - Chloe Francoise Belis. Survivors include: his half sister Joan Warholic of Rathway, NJ; daughter Mary (Roger) Baldoza of Elyria, OH; son Mitchel (Rebecca) Belis of Bradenton, FL; daughter in law Diane U. Belis of Kenmore, NY. Eight Grandchildren: David Baldoza of Grafton, OH; Karen Baldoza (Peter Angus) of Albany, NY; Joseph Belis and Peter Belis of Bradenton, FL; Andrea Belis of Charlotte, NC; Katie (Craig) Turk of Kenmore, NY; Stephen (Morgan) Belis of Hamden, CT; Zachary Belis of New Paltz, NY; eleven great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Private family service will be held at a later date.
