Mary Gouwens Detweiler, 89, passed away peacefully at home with her daughter by her side on December 18, 2018.
Mary was born May 23, 1929 in Chicago, IL to Frank Theodore Zini and Rose Sheker Zini.
After working as a secretary in downtown Chicago, she married Willis E. Gouwens, MD and raised 4 children.
She later married Raymond Detweiler, and enjoyed many years of traveling in their small airplane.
Mary was always involved in her community. She was a past president of the Women's Auxiliary to the Manatee County Medical Society.
She was a member P.E.O. Sisterhood since 1974, and served as a past president, vice president, recording secretary, chaplain, delegate to several state conventions and to the international convention in Oklahoma City in Sept. 2003
She was a member of Palma Sola Presbyterian Church since 1967, member of the chancel choir since 1965, and past president of Presbyterian Women
Mary served six years with the Peace River Presbytery in many capacities, including on the new Church development committee as vice chairman, board of trustees member, and served as corporate secretary of P.R.P.
She loved singing and playing piano, and met both her husbands in church choir!
Mary always beat everyone at cards and loved to go (didn't matter where!)
She loved flying and acquired her pilot's license at age 48!
Mary traveled extensively, including trips to Europe, Alaska, Central America, Canada, and all over the USA!
She enjoyed family time most of all and loved to spoil her grandchildren, Ryan and Katy.
Mary is predeceased by her husband, Raymond Detweiler, and 2 sons, David Frank Gouwens, MD, and Paul Alan Gouwens, PT.
She is survived by a son, James (Cyndi) Gouwens, a daughter, Kathryn (Wayne) Boudreaux, and two grandchildren, Ryan Jacob Boudreaux, DPT, and Mariah Kaitlyn Boudreaux.
