George E. Maha was born in Elgin, Illinois. He graduated Magna cum Laude from the University of Norte Dame and from the Saint Louis University School of Medicine where he was elected to the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Medical Society. He completed a Cardiovascular Fellowship in Medicine at the Duke University Hospital. He later had clinical teaching appointments in Medicine at Northwestern University, Indiana University, Georgetown University, and the Jefferson Medical College. After experience in medical practice, he devoted his career to pharmaceutical clinical research holding positions at Lilly Laboratories, the Food and Drug Administration, and Merck Research Laboratories where he was Executive Director of clinical research. After retiring from Merck, he became Medical Director for Burroughs Wellcome clinical research. He was a diplomat of the American Board of Internal Medicine and has been a member of a number of medical societies and an author of medical publications. He served as chairman of the medical section committee for the Pharmaceutical Research and Manufacturing Association and was listed in Who’s Who in America and Who’s Who in American Men of Science.

Dr. Maha served in the Army Air Corp during World War II and rose to the rank of Technical Sergeant with service in Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines. He received the Bronze Star Medal for meritorious service.

George was an avid reader with a particular interest in historical non-fiction. He loved to travel and fish, especially surf fishing off the Outer Banks of North Carolina where he had a summer cottage for many years. He and his wife retired in 1991 and made their home in Longboat Key and then Bradenton, Florida. As an active member of his church, he served many volunteer roles and as an Eucharistic Minister.

Dr. Maha is survived by his wife of 64 years, Mary Rasmussen Maha. He is also survived by his five children George C. Maha (Ruth), Richard D. Maha (Debbie), Mary M. Elkins (Augustus), Andrea M. Litzenberg (Ken), and Sarah A. Maha, as well as 8 grandchildren Daniel Maha (Carrie), Barbara Maha, John Maha (Jillian), George Jay Maha, Thomas Maha (Quena), Laura Litzenberg Pagano (Jimmy), Maggie Litzenberg, and Olivia Elkins. In addition, he was blessed with 5 great grandchildren Carli Maha, Paige Maha, Adelyn Maha, Reagan Maha and Avery Maha.

Funeral Mass will be held Tuesday at 9:30 am November 21, 2017 at Saints Peter and Paul the Apostles Catholic Church. 2850 75th Street West, Bradenton FL, and will be laid to rest at Sarasota National Cemetery in Sarasota FL with military honors.
