Eric Smith

March 28, 1969 — August 17, 2023

Eric Lyn Smith, a man of unyielding determination and boundless spirit, passed away peacefully at his home August 17, 2023. He was born in Denver, Colorado on March 28, 1969. His remarkable journey through life was marked by his unshakeable drive, deep love for his family and friends, and passion for music. He was predeceased by his father, David F. Smith. He leaves behind his loving wife, Deborah Bills Smith, and their children, Taylor and Tucker Smith, who were a source of pride and joy for him. His brother, Kris, his mother, Sarah W. Smith, his sister, Lydia Smith Buffington, (Chris) and cherished nieces, Hannah and Grace.

Eric’s early years were spent in Deposit, NY, and Oquaga Lake, where he discovered his love for music at a young age. He enjoyed playing piano and was often found playing in the First United Methodist Church in Deposit, the McClure Methodist Church, at school, and anywhere else he could find a piano. His connection to music reflected his drive and determination, traits that shone through even from a young age. He graduated from Deposit Central High School in 1987, ready to begin the next journey life held for him. He moved to Bradenton, Florida that fall. While attending Manatee Junior College, he began working full-time in the food industry. Eric approached his career with the same unwavering commitment and tenacity that he had displayed as a young child. He commenced his professional journey at Po Folks and rapidly ascended to a managerial role at Olive Garden. His path then led him to what is now Breakthru Beverage, where he started as a sales manager in the wine division. Over the span of 25 years, he concluded his illustrious career as the Spirits Division Manager, overseeing the West Coast of Florida. His dedication and excellence were recognized through numerous awards, including the prestigious Jack Daniels’ Jackademy award for three consecutive years. In addition, his managerial role afforded him the privilege to travel extensively across the United States, Canada, and Europe, a passion he wholeheartedly shared with his wife.

One of Eric’s most cherished qualities was his ability to forge deep and lasting friendships. Whether reconnecting with childhood companions or forming connections during his travels, Eric's radiant warmth and genuine interest in others had a way of endearing him to everyone he crossed paths with. A simple gesture, like buying a drink, often transformed into a night of laughter and camaraderie, leaving those in his company feeling like they had just met a new best friend. His generosity knew no bounds, leaving an imprint of kindness on countless hearts.

Even in the face of a challenging stage four cancer diagnosis, Eric never yielded to despair. With unwavering strength, determination, and an unyielding will to fight, he confronted the challenge head-on. His medical team marveled at his indomitable spirit and constant good humor, as he defied the odds at every turn. As we bid farewell to Eric Lyn Smith, we celebrate a life that was lived with compassion, determination, and generosity.
