February 27, 1931 – October 9, 2015

General John Casey died peacefully on Friday, the 9th of October, 2015 surrounded by his loved ones.  A Vietnam veteran, he was a senior aviator and parachutist.  His distinctions included; Legion of Merit w/ 3 Oak Leaf Clusters, Distinguished Flying Cross w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Air Medal w/ 23 Oak Leaf Clusters, Army Commendation Medal w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, Purple Heart, National Defense Service Medal w/ Oak Leaf Cluster, Vietnam Service Medal w/ 5 Campaign Stars, Senior Army Aviator Badge, Senior Parachutist Badge, and numerous other decorations and citations. He retired after 28 years of service.

Following his impressive career in the Army, General Casey moved to Bradenton in 1979 and taught math at Harlee Middle School for 14 years. He was also an active member of the Longboat Island Chapel on Longboat Key. General Casey was an avid sailor, who spent many hours on his sailboat, Pegasus.  He also loved a day of golf at the Tara Golf & Country Club.

He is survived by his loving bride, Arlene Marie Casey of Bradenton, five daughters: Susan Casey of FL, Jane Casey of Bradenton, Shawn Morrison of Galveston, TX, Pattie (Matthew) Anderson of Morristown, NJ, Regina (Roman) Kaukereit of Cary, NC; seven grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and many extended family members and friends.

A celebration of General Casey’s life will be held at 9:00 A.M. on Friday, October 30, 2015 at the Longboat Island Chapel, 6200 Gulf of Mexico Drive, Longboat Key, FL. Committal services will be held at 2:00 P.M. on Friday, October 30, 2015 at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 Clark Road, Sarasota, with full military honors by the United States Army Honor Guard to be rendered.

In lieu of flowers, the family request that memorials be made to either the Longboat Island Chapel or Army Emergency Relief Fund, Attn. Donations, 200 Stoval St., Room 5S33, Alexandria, VA 22332-0600.
