Avis Thomas Wilkinson passed away on January 3, 2018. She was born in Bell, Florida on April 21, 1922 to Lillie Mae and Charles Waterman Thomas. She had six brothers and sisters. She and her family moved to Gainesville at the age of 12.
She received her Bachelor’s degree in Social Studies and Math Education in 1943 from Florida State College for Women (FSU) and her Masters in Counselor Education in 1967 from University of Florida.
Avis lived in Bradenton, Florida where she was employed by the Manatee County School System for 34 years, first as a math teacher and then as a guidance counselor. She was a lifetime member of Entre Nous, and served First Presbyterian Church in several capacities.
In retirement, Avis volunteered for seven years as a Guardian Ad Litem, for the Manatee County Juvenile Court System. She was also very active in several community and national organizations, serving as president of several of them including American Association of University Women, Retired Educators of Manatee County, Delta Kappa Gamma, Kappa Chapter and Beta Sigma Phi. She also served on the Board of Directors and scholarship committee for the Girl Scout Gulf Coast Council. In her leisure time, she enjoyed playing golf and bridge.
She is survived by her sons, Randal Wilkinson (Martha), Mark Wilkinson (Jonni), and her daughter, Sondra Waugh(Gary), as well as six grandchildren and 4 great grandchildren.
The family will receive friends at a viewing on Sunday, January 7, 3-5 pm at Shannon Funeral Home Westview Chapel, 5610 Manatee Ave W Bradenton, Florida. Funeral services will be Monday, January 8 at 1:00 pm at First Presbyterian Church 1402 Manatee Ave W, Bradenton, Florida, with a reception following the service. The interment will be held at Fogartyville Cemetery, 717 12th Street W, Bradenton, Florida following the reception.
